NOTES: 2023 release

With the recent release of the ICM 1/72 Ki-21-I, it was inevitable that there would be a decal sheet for this kit. It is not surprising that Rising would do this as they have produced a number of quality sheets for Japanese WWII subjects. I am sure that those of you with the old Revell or MPM kits will find that these markings will fit.

This sheet provides markings for eight different subjects. All but one of them have a base color of Japanese army green-grey, which is part of most paint lines. The sheet provides sufficient insignia for two of the eight options.

From the top we have Hammamatsu flying school in 1941/42.

Next with a dark green mottle overspray is with 25th Air Brigade HQ flight in 1943.

Third option is another 25th Air Brigade HQ plane which has its tail marking overpainting the previous unit's marking.

Fourth with a very simple marking is from an unknown unit photographed in the Philippines in 1943. Note that the dark green on this one is a solid shade.

In the nice dark green/brown scheme this one from the 14th Sentai in 1941/42. This unit was based in the Philippines. Note the canopy frames on this one are in the original green-grey.

Sixth option is with the 60th Sentai in China during 1940.

Another patchy upper surface green is on this 14th Sentai plane based at Lakunai on New Britain in 1943. This aircraft was being used in the transport role.

Finally an 81 Sentai plane, also based at Lakunai in late 1943. Like many of the Ki-21s in this theater, the uppersurface has been roughly repainted in a dark green. As the 81st Sentai was flying the Ki-46, this aircraft was used as a hack.

The sheet itself is superbly printed with the instructions providing color information using Gunze paints. There are a number of other paint brands that do Japanese WWII shades s finding something will be pretty easy. Rising Decals generally sell out quite quickly and are rarely reprinted.
